AMAR

The Protea Institutethrough donations and partnerships with private philanthropic hospitals that serve SUS patients, helps pay for surgery, exams, consultations, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy for breast cancer. The AMAR project was designed with Santa Marcelina Hospital - high-resolution Breast Cancer care - which aims to reduce the time between the first consultation and the start of treatment for patients, as well as offering fast, high-quality treatment for the cure of breast cancer. The Project has 4 pillars:

1. Funding for an on-call mastologist at Santa Marcelina Hospital to increase the number of consultations and supplementary exams to confirm the diagnosis. The time between the first consultation with the specialist and additional diagnostic tests was reduced by 45 days, and the number of screening consultations increased by 15%

2. Funding for an anesthesiologist exclusively for tumor removal surgeries and prevent cancelled surgeries due to lack of professionals;

3. Funding for Mammotomy exams in partnership with Nova Diagnóstica Laboratory, a diagnostic exam for non-palpable nodules that cannot be examined through mammography. With the AMAR project, Protea replaced diagnostic surgery with this clinical exam, which is faster, less invasive, more comfortable and safer, to confirm the patient’s diagnosis.

With the funding for the anesthesiologist and with the Mammotomy exam done at the laboratory instead of the operating room, the waiting time for surgery was reduced from 60 days to under 30.

4. Funding for full treatment over 11 months, including surgery, consultations and exams, chemotherapy and radiotherapy sessions. Protea increased the number of women undergoing treatment at Santa Marcelina Hospital each month by 50%.

As part of the full treatment, we manage the Patient Support Group, with fortnightly in-person or online meetings, providing psychologists, art therapists, conversation circles, physiotherapists, among others. All volunteering professionals.

Women’s Health Support Group

As a complementary part of the treatment for breast cancer patients at Santa Marcelina Hospital, a partner of Protea Institute, we strengthen the bond with patients through meetings of the Women’s Health Support Group. At these meetings, which take place twice a month, the emotional evolution of patients is monitored through sharing feelings, pain, and challenges, in a safe and welcoming space. The volunteers who attend the meetings - professional psycho-educators, psychologists, or art therapists - donate their time and knowledge to strengthen The Protea patients on these days, which always count on the presence of a member of the Protea Team.

The Protea’s CORES Optimized Care for Emotional and Social Rehabilitation - center is a branch of the support group that offers more alternatives and services for breast cancer patients. The Center is divided into: PROTEA Psicos (Psychological and Social Support) and PROTEA Ecos (Complementary Specialty Guidance and Support).

At Psicos, Protea’s volunteer professionals offer online and in-person individual and group psychotherapy, psychoeducation, art therapy, mindfulness and social assistance to patients.

Protea understands that all-round wellbeing is essential for treating breast cancer.
