Our activities

In partnership with charitable hospitals, Protea invests in expanding the number of places available to treat low-income patients. It also carries out initiatives to provide support, raise awareness, conduct research, and develop public policies.

Diagnosis and treatment

Through the AMAR project, we work in partnership with Santa Marcelina Hospital (São Paulo) to cover the costs of tests, consultations, surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. This has allowed us to increase the number of patients treated, reducing the time between diagnosis and the start of treatment.
Protea does not choose which patients will have their treatment funded by the Institute. These are patients referred to Santa Marcelina Hospital through the CROSS and Hebe Camargo (SUS) health centers.

Support and recovery

The Women's Health Support Group welcomes female cancer patients from Santa Marcelina Hospital and offers, in addition to discussion groups, other complementary activities such as art therapy, psychotherapy, stretching, physical therapy, micropigmentation, among others. Patients are referred to Protea by the hospital's mastology team or by other patients. From there, they can attend the meetings and participate in the proposed activities.

Education and awareness

Through Jornada Protea, patients and their families have access to a database of basic information. In addition, Jornada Protea also facilitates the journey of patients from partner hospitals through Patient Navigation.
Through videos of doctors, therapists, and patient testimonials, guidance and information are available on breast cancer detection and treatment types, prevention methods, and emotional support. Everything that can help women detect, seek qualified professionals, and treat breast cancer and its effects early on.

Research

Protea Institute is also active in research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. The Artificial Intelligence project, for example, aims to estimate a woman's chances of developing breast cancer within five years, with subsequent monitoring for early detection. The Artificial Intelligence project was developed by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and was implemented in June 2022 as a research project at Santa Marcelina Hospital, with funds donated by the Patrick McGovern Foundation.

Public Policies

Protea Institute, in search of alternatives for early diagnosis, created Cuida Mama, a network project to identify bottlenecks and propose solutions for the journey from suspicion to the start of breast cancer treatment.
